Star Wars Announces Historic Theatrical Re-Release for Disney+ Spin-off

Andor is set to expand the story of the Rebellion amid the threat of the whole might of the Empire. The upcoming Disney+ prequel series is set to revolve around Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, who is one of the main characters of Star Wars: Rogue One. The 12-episode adventure is expected to tackle the formative years of the Rebellion, leading to the notable mission to steal the Death Star plans that transpired in the Star Wars spin-off and led to Andor’s death.

Despite a slight delay in its release, the anticipation surrounding the Star Wars show has been high. Andor‘s trailers proved the massive scale of the series, tackling many subplots, such as Cassian’s origins, the political side of the Rebellion, and the Empire’s reign.

While fans are waiting for the show’s small-screen premiere, a significant new update about Andor could further build the hype for its impending release.

Star Wars Re-Releases Rogue One Ahead of Andorra’s Premiere

Fandango officially revealed that Lucasfilm will re-release Star Wars: Rogue One in select IMAX theaters on Friday, August 26 to promote the film’s Disney+ spin-off, Andor. Fans attending the theatrical re-release will also be treated to an exclusive look at Andor ahead of its September premiere.

RogueOne‘s return to theaters marks the first time that Disney is re-releasing a movie to promote an upcoming Disney+ series.

Alongside the reveal, a new poster for RogueOne was unveiled:

Here is a short synopsis of the movie’s upcoming re-release:

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

What This Historic Move Means to Other Disney+ Shows

RogueOne‘s re-release is a fitting way to celebrate Andor‘s upcoming Disney+ premiere while also allowing fans to relive the compelling story of the Star Wars anthology movie. This historic move essentially shows the faith that Disney and Lucasfilm have in the Diego Luna-led series, meaning that it has the potential to be a memorable hit in the small-screen lineup of the epic space franchise.

At this stage, details about the exclusive look at Andor that will be shown alongside Rogue One’s re-release are still being kept under wraps. There’s a chance that another new trailer or an exclusive featurette will be unveiled during the special screenings. In addition, several cast members of the series could show up to personally thank those who attended RogueOne‘s back to theaters.

This isn’t the first time that Andor is breaking ground on Star Wars and Disney+. Instead of relying on CGI and The Volume (a filming technology used by other shows like The Mandalorian), Andor creator Tony Gilroy revealed that they opted for a more practical approach as “[they] didn’t use StageCraft at all,” saying that it adds “even more grit and earthiness” to the series.

It remains to be seen if other Disney+ shows will follow Andor in terms of leading the charge by re-releasing a movie in theaters. Still, this unprecedented move should further build anticipation for the series as it approaches its September release.

The first three episodes of Andor will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, September 21.
